EG4 6000XP Inverter Review

3 reviews for EG4 6000XP – 48V 6kW Off-Grid All-in-One Inverter/Charger

  1. CrystalNClear_71

Amazing inverter, very easy to set up. Handles the EG4 minisplit with no issues.

  2. Rock_N_Ruth

I bought mine in March 2024. It was a replacement for the 6000ex which suffered an internal failure after about two years. The ease of installation far supersedes the very heavy 6000ex. The user panel where you make the connections is more roomy than the 6000ex. The built in breakers for Line in, Generator in, and Line out are a real plus.
Sadly missing a pre-charge circuit, maybe in the next iteration.
The remote management through the web site is light years ahead of the software for the 6000ex. It is also sad that the android app has less functionality.
We have this installed in our full time off grid skoolie with 4K plus of real time solar input and an 1100AH DIY battery. It lets us live almost like we are grid tied, without the wires.
This summer is being a hot one and and we are having to turn off one air conditioner to run the Microwave, because, a 1100W AC unit and a 2200W microwave push the limit of the 3000W per line output. No load balancing. But for $1399.00 that’s not a surprise. We are preparing to pull the trigger on a second 6000xp to handle the extra loads of wanting to live like an eskimo in a big metal box in the Chihuahua desert of SW New Mexico
One thing I forgot to mention is that the low idle current claims are verified in real world use. Which is one of the reasons we have decided on #2. We are planning to run the air conditioning circuits alone on the second inverter which will be really underutilizing the potential. In our book it should just make it last longer. We will be making the purchase of our second 6000XP from Current Connected because we had a real customer support nightmare with Signature Solar and have had a number of conversations with, Current Connected, that indicate it is far less likely to be the case here.

I was happy with these units at first…. they have all the right features, decent terminals, easy to install, and decent monitoring portal. But after a couple months of use and several different sites set up with open-loop charge control by Voltage, I am sorry to say that it is NOT possible to set up the charge curve correctly for Lithium, and EG4 support has made no meaningful response, and has not issued a firmware patch. I am pretty unhappy that an otherwise good inverter has inadequate charge control software…. and even more disappointed in EG4 lack of responsiveness to a significant software bug that will reduce the life of my batteries.

Question:

Does the generator input also support 120V or does it have to be split phase 240V

aqueel
29-Oct-2023

Answer:

It must be 120/240v split phase. Furthermore, the manual indicates that it must be an inverter-type generator.

Question:

Does this work with solar panels only or does it have to have batteries

shadowwolf20
05-Nov-2023

Answer:

You can select to operate with 'No Battery' in the battery settings. Do note, that this means the inverter can only power loads that do not exceed the amount of PV coming in - so if could were to pass, the inverter would likely be forced to shut down due to insufficient PV capacity.

Question:

The 480VDC MAX Rating……Is that MAX per MPPT, or the total VOC MAX for both MPPTs, combined?

bhaz2
06-Nov-2023

Answer:

It would be the same either way. If you connect a 480v max array to MPPT 1 and a 480v max array to MPPT 2, then it would work fine. Each MPPT is isolated, so to clarify, you could not connect a 960v string, but you could connect two 480v strings, provided they are independent of one another.

Question:

Does this inverter frequency shift for throttling a grid-tied inverter?

ProtonWH
06-Nov-2023

Answer:

No. This is an off-grid inverter, not a hybrid inverter. For this type of functionality, we recommend looking at the EG4 18k-PV or 12k-PV hybrid inverters.

Question:

How does this inverter address neutral-ground bonding in both on and off grid modes? EG4 says "The 6000XP architecture assumes there is a single neutral-ground bond in the system. Typically, the Neutral-Ground Bond for a system will be at the first means of disconnect for the grid. However, if there is no Neutral-ground bond in the system the 6000XP can be configured to create the bond internally. Note that this is not a dynamic bond. It is always enabled or always disabled. Further information can be found in the manual." Currently I use EG4 EHV3000 and it has dynamic NG bonding mechanism. On grid the neutral of AC output is connected to the neutral of AC input and the neutral of AC output is connected to the ground of AC output - so NG bonding is dynamically change. Thanks

nickrhee
19-Nov-2023

Answer:

There is no dynamic neutral ground bond. You can either turn on the neutral ground bond or turn it off. For this reason, we do not recommend this inverter in mobile applications, such as RVs.

Question:

Question:

The EG46000xp has a list of compatible manufactured batteries. I am looking to assemble a 16s 48v (16x3.2 280ah) unit. are generic BMS able to communicate with the inverter? are there specific comm protocols required? can they use the can or rs485? thx

[email protected]
02-Dec-2023

Answer:

The battery must be on the approved list for support. Communication may work, but it will not be supported. It has CAN, and RS485.

Question:

I have an aging 8.5 kw westerbeke generator that does ok for the most part but the older EG4s had trouble syncing/handshaking not sure the term. My outback fx3648 inverter/charger/transformer type does fine. Curious if you know if this model is equally as sensitive to the AC input as the older EG4 inverters. I’m also considering connecting to generator as a 220v to get the full 100amp charge out of it. This is for a houseboat. Currently have a single bank of EVE cells lf280k lifepo4s. 16S with 3600w of PV. I have other questions lmk of ok to send before purchase.Bob

Bobwn
06-Dec-2023

Answer:

EG4 requires the use of an inverter generator as the gen import. An alternative option is to use something like the EG4 chargeverter, as they do not require inverter generators.

Question:

I currently have two 48V "HUSKY" – LiFePO4 – 103Ah – 5.3kWh batteries. They have an internal BMS that does not have the ability to network with an inverter... Are they compatible with the 6000XP?

Habilis
08-Dec-2023

Answer:

Yes, you can use LiFePO4 batteries that do not have communication. You will use the Lead acid setting, with certain charging voltages that are not required set to 0V.

Question:

The Off-Grid 6000XP comes with WiFi dongle. If, however, your Off-Grid property does not have WiFi, is it still possible to do Firmware updates via Bluetooth or via data from your smart device/iPad/iPhone? or is this not recommended? Thanks.

D90Don
10-Jan-2024

Answer:

The firmware can be updated via the EG4 Monitor app by connecting your device locally to the dongle. All the instructions are in the manual.

Question:

6000XP demo videos claim no need for Solar Combiner Box. If my PV array already has a combiner box, should I bypass it or leave it as is? Any advantage to either approach?

D90Don
10-Jan-2024

Answer:

It would depend on your array size. The statement of no need for a combiner box refers to the ability to set the PV input as ‘Two MPPT connects to same string’ or ‘Two MPPT connects to different string’ Giving you the ability to parallel two strings at the unit or have two independent strings.

Question:

Would running unbalanced arrays on each MPPT be an issue in a split-phase configuration? I have 2 2000w arrays that at times will have a PV output differential as high as 800W due to varying tilt and shading characteristics

[email protected]
10-Jan-2024

Answer:

In the settings you can select to have two independent strings or to parallel the strings at the unit, in your case you would select independent strings to maximize your yield.

Question:

I am 10,000 ft and this would seem to be ideal for my situation. I noticed that the data sheet limits its use to 2km high and wondered why and if it is an issue if there is a work around. Obviously we need to adjust propane and small engines but have not come across an issue with electrics.

TheBoiler
13-Feb-2024

Answer:

Any altitude above the 2km rating in the spec sheet will not allow for the cooling to be as efficient as well as thinner air providing worse electrical isolation. This inverter would be a poor choice at 10,000 ft.

Question:

Is AC output from the 6000XP split phase only, or can it be configured as split phase or single phase?

[email protected]
23-Feb-2024

Answer:

The AC output is split phase only.

Question:

Can this unit handle 2/0 battery cables?

[email protected]
23-Feb-2024

Answer:

Yes, you will need to use ring terminals with a 5/16" hole, however.

Question:

Does the EG4 6000xp have built in pre-charge circuitry or should I use a resistor when making initial battery connection

[email protected]
01-Mar-2024

Answer:

The 6000XP does not have a pre charge circuit. Some batteries have in built pre charge, If your battery does not, we would advise pre charging using a resistor or other suitable method. Please see our You tube channel for methods of Pre Charging.

Question:

Can I use the remote access to change settings on the inverter? Initial set up configuring to be specific. Thanks

CrystalNClear_71
15-Mar-2024

Answer:

Yes! The EG4 Monitoring app allows for any of the inverter settings to be changed remotely. This includes any initial setup, besides the Wi-Fi Dongle itself. That requires the user to be nearby the inverter.

Question:

Can I use this inverter in solar priority/ battery when tied to grid? And when grid down for backup?

Idahocartel
21-Mar-2024

Answer:

Yes, you can adjust the settings so that the inverter will prioritize Solar and battery when grid tied, then it will also operate as a backup if the grid goes down.

Question:

Can I use this with solar and battery priority then grid and generator as backup?

Idahocartel
26-Mar-2024

Answer:

Yes, you can adjust the settings so that the inverter will prioritize Solar, battery and then Grid or generator as the back up.

Question:

Can the wi-fi dongle be remoted via an extension cable?

carefree
08-Apr-2024

Answer:

No, currently there is not any cable or extender that EG4 makes or recommends.

Question:

Spec says "recommends 200AH battery" but can it handle a 230AH?

[email protected]
18-Apr-2024

Answer:

Yes, it can handle a battery bank that is 200Ah or more. 200Ah is the bare minimum.

Question:

If using this with solar and batteries with grid backup, will it push any power back into the grid? I need something that can receive grid power when needed but never energize the grid.

[email protected]
06-May-2024

Answer:

No, this inverter has no feedback capabilities whatsoever.

Question:

In a question below it is asked about the max PV input per MPPT, the answer is each MPPT is 480Vdc, so the total for the unit would be 960Vdc, correct?

Don Becker
10-Aug-2024

Answer:

Each MPPT operates independently and isolated of one-another. In other words, you cannot make 960V strings, but you can make two separate 480V strings.

Question:

Can this inverter and the wall mount battery be used with solar and a wind turbine?

timothyaludwig
12-Oct-2024

Answer:

No, this inverter only has Solar capabilities. It has no input for a wind turbine.

Question:

New to solar, considering the kit that includes this inverter. Being split phase, how does it handle unbalanced 120v loads on each side? Taken to the extreme of 3kW on one side 0W on the other (I realize this is highly unlikely in practice)

violetgizmo
06-Nov-2024

Answer:

The 6000XP does not line balance. Meaning if there is a load on one leg that is 3000W and no load on the other, it would wouldn't balance the loads. One line would remain at that high load while the other stays at 0.
